A Thousand Days

Silence is Golden

Chuck Turchick, Minneapolis Accountability-Expert and general pain in the City Council’s ass, has a new message this week…

Here’s a change: a positive email from me. I hope it doesn’t confuse you.

My compliments! It has been one thousand days now since that buttinsky, Judge Kathryn Quaintance, publicly issued those quaint, if not silly, questions the jurors in the Mohamed Noor trial had about policing in Minneapolis. That not a public peep in response has emanated from either the Mayor’s office or from any Council member for these two years and nine months is nothing short of remarkable. Such persistence since June 7, 2019, should not go unnoticed.

Yes, I realize some of you are new to the Council and can’t yet take credit for this achievement, but I am confident you will continue this sterling record of silence. I was thrilled that the three new Council members I met with on this issue immediately saw that my comments meant the exact opposite of what they seemed to convey.

Most, if not all, people outside of City Hall with whom I have discussed this have not been so perceptive. They actually think you should have replied to the Judge, even as a matter of simple courtesy. How naive! No, your silence speaks volumes, and I’m sure she has gotten the message, even though, for some strange reason, she repeated her request at Noor’s resentencing on October 21, 2021. Go figure!

We’ve all seen protesters carry signs saying, “Silence is Complicity.” Well, sometimes Silence is Golden, and maybe all the more so when it comes to public officials. The Judge doesn’t appreciate this; you clearly do.

Arthur Schlesinger’s book about JFK, A Thousand Days, won a Pulitzer Prize. Some day a book will be written about your one thousand days of silence. It will have lots of blank pages, so it probably won’t win any awards, but that doesn’t make your achievement any less impressive. Monks who’ve taken vows of silence have often fallen short, but not you. Congratulations, and keep up the good work — or whatever you call it. May your one thousand days become a thousand years.

As usual, there is no need to reply to this email. Should any of you get caught responding to the Judge, I will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This email will self-destruct in ten seconds, If it doesn’t, put it in the usual place, along with all of my other emails on this topic.

Yours,

Chuck Turchick
