Dear Council Members,
There could not be a worse way to enter into an agreement with the MDHR about police changes in Minneapolis without the public having any opportunity to read, let alone weigh in on, the agreement you are about to vote on. That is the epitome of elitism, if not darn close to authoritarianism.
Neither I nor anyone else in Minneapolis, including police officers and OPCR staff, will have had any chance of giving our own Council members any input on how we think they should vote.
If that is the process you will be engaging in tomorrow, it will be a parody of and a disgrace to representative democracy. The only principled vote would be to abstain, if not vote “No,” until the public has had a chance to give you their views about this document.
If this first step of major police reform in Minneapolis is going to be taken with zero public input on the document, we’re headed for a cliff.
Yours,
Chuck Turchick
